Community Program June 16 To Focus On Heart Failure

Experts from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will discuss heart failure and its treatment options at a special community program from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 16, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, located at 1220 First Ave. in Coralville.

Cardiologists John Chase, M.D., and Frances Johnson, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon David Helman, M.D., and registered dietitian Marti Bradbury will present "Treating Heart Failure Today and Tomorrow."

Heart failure affects nearly five million Americans. You may join these UI Heart and Vascular Care experts for this second annual heart failure symposium as they discuss the following topics:

-- Heart Failure Terms and Tests: Heart failure patients go through a series of tests. What do they mean and how are they used?

-- Heart Pumps: Heart pumps, or ventricular assist devices, offer a more fulfilling life for thousands of patients. Hear how these pumps work and what they may do for patients in the future.

-- Can You Mend a Broken Heart? Presenters will give an update on stem cells and regenerative therapies.

-- Extreme Recipe Makeover: Heart failure patients need to cut their intake of salt. Learn how to get more flavor with less salt.

Light refreshments will be served. Participants also are invited to stay after the program for the opportunity to talk with physicians, nurses and heart failure patients.

Part of the "Health For Your Lifetime" series, this annual heart failure symposium was rescheduled after inclement weather hampered attendance on the program's original date on Feb. 24.

Pre-registration is encouraged. To register, please call UI Health Access at 319-384-8442 or toll-free at 800-777-8442.
