UI Law Fraternity Chapter Honored For Civic Engagement Activities

The Phi Alpha Delta international legal fraternity has presented its chapter of the month award for May to the W. G. Hammond Chapter at the University of Iowa College of Law in honor of its numerous community service activities.

The UI chapter was honored for its participation in building two Habitat for Humanity houses in September and October and for participating in the "Especially For You" walk in Cedar Rapids in October to benefit breast cancer awareness and research.

The chapter also staffed an October fundraising event at the UI Museum of Art to benefit the museum.

Other public service activities the chapter has sponsored or participated in recently include a wine tasting to benefit Iowa Legal Aid and help low-income Iowans receive legal assistance; a collection drive for items for use at the Coralville/Iowa City animal care and adoption center; volunteering at the Iowa City Public Library; and cooking for families at the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House. The organization plans future public service activities with Shelter House and the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

Established in 1902 and with more than 265,000 members, Phi Alpha Delta is the nation's oldest and largest legal fraternity. It seeks to unite law students, professors, practicing attorneys and judges to advance the legal profession. The UI's Hammond Chapter was founded in 1908 and was the first chapter to integrate along racial and religious lines. It is named after W. G. Hammond, a law professor and scholar who was the College of Law's chancellor and dean from 1870 to 1881.
