UI Honors Program Students Participate As Writing Fellows

(STUDENT NAME) of (HOMETOWN), a University of Iowa honors student, has been working throughout the spring semester as a UI Writing Fellow, assisting other UI students with their academic writing.

The Writing Fellows Program is an undergraduate peer tutoring initiative to help students improve their writing. The program began in the 1980s at Brown University and has since spread to other colleges and universities of all sizes. The UI program was started in 2003 by Carol Severino, the current director of the program, and Mary Trachsel, professors in the UI Rhetoric Department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS).

The goals of the Writing Fellows Program are to improve student writing and writing processes; to promote collaborative learning; and to encourage instructors to use writing in their courses in order to help their students learn.

Writing Fellows are honors students specially selected and assigned to professors in courses across the curriculum. They work with the students in each course on drafts of two major course papers. For the past eight semesters UI professors in the CLAS departments of American studies, anthropology, classics, dance, English, exercise science, geography, geoscience, health and sport studies, history, leisure studies, political science, religious studies, Russian, women's studies, and literature, science and the arts have worked with writing fellows to help more than 1,000 students improve their papers.

The spring 2007 staff consisted of Severino, Assistant Director Megan Knight, and six commenting mentors: Jen Ambrose, J. P. Craig, Pat Dolan, Richard Landon, Jen McGovern and Lauren Clodi Whitehead.
