University Of Iowa Student Wins Prestigious Udall Scholarship

Jacqueline Leonard, a University of Iowa junior from Ballwin, Mo., is the first-ever winner of a Udall Scholarship. The scholarship is a $5,000 award given to 80 of the nation's top sophomores and juniors who demonstrate a commitment to careers related to the environment, to Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers in tribal public policy, and to Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to native health care.

Leonard is majoring in political science and international business with an emphasis in international environmental relations through the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Tippie College of Business. In July 2005 Leonard traveled to Queensland, Australia as a volunteer in the construction of a hiking trail network along the Sunshine Coast to encourage land and wildlife conservation in Australia. She is also a captain of the UI Mock Trial Team, and she works for the UI Honors Program as a coordinator of arts events.

The Morris K. Udall Foundation was authorized by Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Udall's legacy of public service. The foundation is supported by a trust fund in the U.S. Treasury and contributions from the private sector.

Udall served in the U.S. House of Representatives for three decades, a career distinguished by civility, integrity and consensus. He championed the rights of Native Americans and Alaska natives, using his leadership in congress to strengthen tribal self-governance and national environmental policy.
