Reception Honors Graduating UI International Students May 11
Nearly 500 University of Iowa international students who are candidates for graduation in 2007 will be honored from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, May 11, at a reception in the International Commons, Room 1117 of the University Capitol Centre.
Punit Vyas (photo, left), a UI graduate student from India in the College of Public Health, will be the featured speaker and will deliver a talk titled "My Life, Your Life: The Life of an International Student at the University of Iowa." Vyas has been a campus and community leader, serving as executive officer of the UI Graduate and Professional Student Senate. He also is the past president of the University of Iowa Organization for Active Support of International Students (OASIS).
"This is a time of recognition for international students and their families," said Scott King, director of the UI Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS). "Many of the students' family members will be visiting Iowa City and the United States for the first time."
According to King, 458 international students are scheduled to graduate this spring, with another 24 graduating after the summer session.
OISS, International Programs, the UI Alumni Association and OASIS will host the reception.
OISS is part of UI International Programs, which enables UI students, faculty, staff and the public to learn from and about the world. Its offices, degree programs and events provide life-changing opportunities on campus and abroad, heighten intellectual and cultural diversity and give all university constituents access to vital international knowledge.
