U.S.News Ranks 21 UI Programs Among Top 10 In Nation
U.S.News & World Report now ranks 21 University of Iowa graduate programs and colleges among the 10 best in the country among public universities, placing five of them in first place.
"America's Best Graduate Schools 2008" ranks the UI's physician assistant, nursing service administration and gerontological/geriatric nursing graduate programs as first among public universities. Previous No. 1 rankings of two other UI graduate programs -- speech-language pathology and audiology -- will be carried over into the guidebook's print edition, which is due out April 2.
Other highly ranked UI graduate programs, compared to public universities, are printmaking, 2; social psychology, 3; physical therapy, 3; master of fine arts, 4; rehabilitation counseling, 4 (new ranking); rural medicine, 4 (new ranking); paleontology, 5; nursing-anesthesia, 6 (new ranking); pediatric nurse practitioner, 6 (new ranking)); plasma physics, 6; College of Law, 7 (new ranking); painting/drawing, 7; nursing master's, 9 (new ranking); clinical psychology, 10; internal medicine, 10 (new ranking); the engineering specialty of environmental/environmental health, 10 (new ranking); and clinical psychology, 10.
"The University of Iowa strives continuously to distinguish itself academically among public universities, and rankings such as these only underscore how successful many of our colleges and programs have been at achieving excellence," UI Interim President Gary Fethke said. "The rankings are really a tribute to all the people in these programs, including the deans, department heads, faculty, staff and students. I am grateful to all of them for their efforts to make the University of Iowa distinctive."
UI Executive Vice President and Provost Michael Hogan agreed.
"Rankings like these serve as one indicator of how well we're doing as we work toward our strategic planning goals, and our aspiration to be one of the nation's top 10 public research universities," Hogan said. "The fact that so many of our graduate programs are already at or approaching top 10 status should remind us all that we're blessed with a world-class university right here in Iowa."
John Keller, dean of the Graduate College, said he's pleased that a number of the university's graduate program offerings have again been recognized as among the best in the nation.
"Not only have our traditionally strong programs maintained their top rankings, but at least one, biological sciences, made substantial improvements in the rankings," Keller said. "This recognition, amongst other indicators, reflects well on the strength and breadth of the graduate program offerings at the University of Iowa and is a tribute to our students and faculty."
The full, print edition of the annual guide will be available at newsstands Monday, April 2. All of the information in the printed guide, plus deeper rankings that are available only online, may also be found at http://www.usnews.com. A subscription is required to access all of the data.
Each year, U.S.News ranks graduate programs in the areas of business, education, engineering, law, and medicine. These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students. For the rankings in all five areas, indicator and opinion data come from surveys of more than 1,000 programs and nearly 9,100 academics and other professionals.
U.S.News first published a reputation-only graduate school ranking in 1987. The annual America's Best Graduate Schools report began in 1990.
