Department of Anesthesia Hosts First International Symposium

Faculty from the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine Department of Anesthesia recently successfully completed the Iowa International Anesthesia Symposium in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the first accredited international symposium ever conducted by University of Iowa Health Care.

More than 200 participants attended the symposium March 3-6, a total that substantially exceeded the organizers' expectations. The symposium offered lectures to the attendees, as well as hands-on demonstrations in regional anesthesia blocks and fiberoptic bronchoscopy procedures at a hospital in La Paz.

"The attendees provided very positive feedback," said the symposium's program director and organizer, Javier Campos, M.D., clinical professor of anesthesia and vice chair for clinical affairs and director of cardiothoracic anesthesia at UI Hospitals and Clinics. "It was a very gratifying experience to share such highly important information about the latest advances in our specialty with our international colleagues."

Participants from the United States, Canada and Mexico learned from a team of nine world-renowned experts in their fields. Topics ranged from the use of regional anesthesia, thoracic and neuroanesthesia to treating patients affected by bloodstream infections.
