Indian Student Alliance Presents Dance Competition March 31

The University of Iowa's Indian Student Alliance will host its fifth annual dance competition, Nachte Raho, starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31 in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. The intercollegiate Indian dance competition is the Midwest's largest, and consistently draws one of the largest audiences out of all cultural events held in the state.

In the past four years, Nachte Raho has become the Midwest's premier showcase for Indian dance troupes, according to Srinivas Akella, president of the Indian Student Alliance. In the past, teams have presented styles of dance ranging from traditional Bhangra and Raas to modern dances based on Bollywood music.

This year's total prize package of $5,000 is the biggest ever, as the show is looking to move beyond its Midwestern roots, Akella said. "Top-caliber teams that routinely compete at the national level will be joining the very best of this region's dance troupes to create an unforgettable night, showcasing the very best of India's exuberant tradition of dance and music," he added.

The program will include a dinner reception at 7 p.m. in the IMU's second-floor ballroom catered by Taj Mahal restaurant of Cedar Rapids.

Tickets are available at $15 for general admission and $25 for reserved seating through the IMU Box Office. Reservations may be made by calling toll-free at 800-346-4401.
