The University of Iowa College of Law is co-sponsoring a workshop to help people become the legal guardians of their elderly parents or adult children with special needs. The guardianship workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28 in the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A. Admission is free.

The workshop will be moderated by Nick Kehrwald and Mike Beal, clinical student interns in the UI College of Law, and Leonard Sandler, a UI clinical law professor. Also on hand will be guest speakers Sondy Kaska, an attorney who specializes in guardianship cases; Marilyn Austin, administrator of mental health and developmental disabilities programs for Iowa County; and David Tiffany, a local parent and lawyer.

The workshop will cover such topics as: why, when and how to obtain a guardianship; working with case managers, service providers and agencies; what parents need to know about acting as the guardian of a special needs adult child; and an introduction to financial planning and trusts.
