UI Professor Emeritus Hans Breder Receives Honorary Doctorate
Hans Breder, professor emeritus of Art and Art History in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Dortmund, Germany, on June 13.
The degree recognizes Breder's artistic achievements and especially his commitments to the University of Dortmund and his involvement in many years of scientific-artistic exchange between the two universities. Breder has donated an archive of his work to Dortmund and has established at Dortmund a foundation for intermedia studies to support art students.
Breder developed the concept of intermedia as a special way of dealing with performance and media art.
Breder collaborated on intermedia projects and publications at the UI Obermann Center for Advanced Studies with Professor Klaus-Peter Busse, of the University of Dortmund's Institute of Arts and Material Culture. Breder and Busse co-edited the volume "Intermedia: Enacting the Liminal."
Breder created the UI Intermedia Program in 1968 and served as director until his retirement in 2000. His works have been shown around the world, including some of the first exhibitions of Western artworks in the former Soviet Union in 1989 and Whitney biennials in 1987, 1989 and 1991. The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies at the UI encourages scholarly interaction to explore broad frontiers of knowledge and investigate complex ideas and problems. Obermann Scholars have published numerous scholarly books and articles and have won millions of dollars in competitive external research funding for projects started at the Center.
