UI's Andreasen Receives Psychiatric Award

Nancy Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., professor of psychiatry who holds the Andrew H. Woods Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has received the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Judd Marmor Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the biopsychosocial model of research on mental disorders.

The award was named after former APA president Judd Marmor, a renowned psychoanalyst and educator who helped lead the scientific community to reject the idea that homosexuality is a mental illness.

In conjunction with receiving the award, Andreasen presented a lecture, "The Creating Brain: The Neuroscience of Genius," at the APA annual meeting held May 19-24 in San Diego.

While in San Diego, Andreasen also spoke May 24 at a meeting of the Presidential Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors, chaired by former Sen. Bob Dole and Donna Shalala, former secretary of U.S. Health and Human Services, at which she discussed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Andreasen chaired an Institute of Medicine and National Research Council report, issued May 8, that recommended that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs revise how it evaluates and compensates former military personnel for service-related PTSD.

Andreasen, who also is director of the Iowa Mental Health Clinical Research Center, is one of the world's foremost authorities on schizophrenia and a pioneer in applying neuroimaging techniques to study the neural basis of major mental illness. Most recently, her work on schizophrenia was discussed in Psychiatric News, the APA's monthly newspaper, in a series of features on schizophrenia researchers. The story can be accessed at:
