UI Conference Showcases Undergraduate Research July 25

More than 100 of the University of Iowa's talented undergraduate researchers will showcase their discoveries this week at the Second Annual UI Summer Undergraduate Research Conference. The conference, hosted by the Graduate College, runs from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 25 at the Iowa Memorial Union's Main Lounge. UI faculty, students and staff are invited to attend.

The Graduate College sponsors the conference as a culmination of the summer undergraduate research experience at the UI. Because participants present their work to the university research community, the event serves as an important professional development opportunity for students preparing for careers in research.

This conference brings together undergraduates from throughout the country who have conducted research in laboratories across 30 departments in nine of the UI's colleges. Most of the students are participants in nine UI research programs for top undergraduate scholars: the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Research Programs, the Iowa Bioscience Advantage, Iowa Research Experiences for Undergraduates, the Summer Microbiology Undergraduate Research Program, the Summer Undergraduate Biochemistry Research Program, the Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research Program and the Summer Research Opportunity Program.

Students in these UI summer research programs work directly with faculty mentors. The research programs help the university recruit talented students, many of whom choose to continue their work at the UI as graduate scholars.
