Whitt Named UI Director Of Student Success Initiatives

College of Education professor Elizabeth J. Whitt will serve as the UI's first director of student success initiatives effective July 1. Her appointment is for a three-year, renewable term.

Thomas R. Rocklin, senior associate provost for undergraduate education and dean of the university college, says the position will bolster the university's commitment to improving undergraduate student success.

"We have a wide variety of initiatives already under way, and the student success team formed last fall is identifying additional opportunities," Rocklin says. He adds that examples of current and emerging student success initiatives include enhancing living/learning communities, developing outcomes assessment plans for every undergraduate major, expanding experiential learning opportunities, and "developing and deploying a clear message about what it means to be a student Hawkeye."

Whitt is professor and former program coordinator for the graduate program in student affairs administration and research in the College of Education's Department of Counseling, Rehabilitation, and Student Development.

Whitt earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Drake University, a master's degree in college student personnel administration from Michigan State University, and a doctorate in higher education administration and sociology from Indiana University.

Whitt's salary will be $85,000, which includes her base salary as a member of the faculty and summer compensation.
