Martha Berner To Perform At 'Java Blend' Live Taping Feb. 9

Chicago singer/songwriter Martha Berner will perform at noon Feb. 9 at the Java House, located at 211 E. Washington St. in downtown Iowa City. The public is invited to be part of the live audience for the free show, which will be recorded for broadcast on the "Java Blend" program originating on University of Iowa radio station WSUI, AM 910.

Berner, who plays guitar, cornet, harmonica, and percussion, recently released her "Ten Tiny Little Pieces" EP. The emotionally charged title track, a ballad inspired by the loss of loved ones, was one of the four tracks that brought together an inspired group of talented musicians for what Berner describes as a "magical" recording experience.

She is touring to promote the release and recently performed live on Fox, CBS and NBC television news shows. Her music been played on hundreds of radio stations nationwide, but she's also been receiving heavy airplay on radio stations in many foreign countries, according to her label, Machine Records.

Magnet music magazine says of Berner "...think Natalie Merchant with fewer adult contemporary leanings or Aimee Mann on a folkier trip. Berner's voice can thicken and thin like Joni Mitchell's and it's unmistakably her greatest asset."

This edition of "Java Blend" will be broadcast at Feb. 16 and Feb. 17 on Iowa Public Radio stations across the state. For broadcast times, see and scroll to "Java Blend."

Hosted by Ben Kieffer, "Java Blend" offers an eclectic mix of live music from the vibrant independent music scene, featuring artists from around the state and around the country. Kieffer infuses the performances with lively chats to find out about the artists' music and lives.

"Java Blend" is taped at noon on Fridays before a live audience at the Java House. The hour is broadcast to an estimated 50,000 Iowa Public Radio listeners. Stations include KUNI Cedar Falls/Waterloo/Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, KUNY/KRNI Mason City, KDMR Des Moines, KDUB Dubuque, WSUI Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, WOI Ames/Des Moines, KTPR Fort Dodge, KOWI Lamoni, and KWOI Carroll.

The program will also be videotaped for several TV broadcasts on the UITV cable channel in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area. The audio version also can be heard worldwide on the Internet via the respective stations' live webcasting.
