New Space To Be Dedicated At Iowa Memorial Union Jan. 19
The Iowa Memorial Union will host a public dedication ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, after a $9.9 million, 16-month renovation project. The celebration will include the dedication of the new Philip G. Hubbard Pavilion and Commons on the east side of the IMU. A reception and tours of the renovated building will follow. The IMU is located on the corner of Madison and Jefferson Streets.
The Hubbard Pavilion honors Hubbard for his years of service and dedication to University students and community members. The new Hubbard Pavilion includes: the first-floor Hubbard Commons, second-floor Student Organization Office Suite and University of Iowa Student Government office, and the third-floor study space and IMU Black Box Theater.
The ceremony, to take place in the Main Lounge of the IMU, will feature remarks from: Phillip Jones, vice president for Student Services; Peter McElligott, UISG president; Robert Downer, Board of Regents, State of Iowa; Interim UI President Gary Fethke; honored guest Richard C. Hubbard (Philip's son); and others.
Hubbard dedicated more than 40 years of service to the UI and witnessed one-third of the university's history. He received his bachelors, masters and doctorate from the UI. Hubbard served as dean of Academic Affairs and vice president of Student Services, and was the first African-American vice president at the UI. He also wrote "My Iowa Journey, The Life Story of the University of Iowa's First African American Professor."
