UI Hospitals And Clinics Focuses On Patient Safety

Faculty and staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City will profile their efforts to enhance patient safety during Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 4-10.

Throughout the week a patient safety display in the first level of the John Pappajohn Pavilion Lobby will detail many of the safety initiatives practiced at UI Hospitals and Clinics, including use of two patient identifiers prior to procedures and treatments, identification and special procedures for administration of high alert medications, hand hygiene and others. Patients, visitors, physicians and staff are encouraged to submit a safety tip and become eligible for a prize. Staff and physicians can take an online safety quiz.

Patients, families and visitors can also learn about the "Partners in Safety" Program, which educates patients on how to become involved in their own health care. Elements of the program include:

--how to communicate with their caregivers about their prescription and non-prescription medications;

--preventing infections; and

--issues to discuss prior to having a surgical procedure.

In addition, UI Hospitals and Clinics recently purchased Patient Safety Net, a new web-based safety reporting system which will be implemented in May 2007. The system will provide more complete data to enhance quality and safety.

UI Hospitals and Clinics is located at 200 Hawkins Dr. in Iowa City. To locate the John Pappajohn Pavilion, see this online map:
