Daily Iowan Racks Up More Awards

The Daily Iowan received honors in numerous categories at this year's Iowa Newspaper Association awards banquet, held Feb. 2 in Des Moines.

DI staff members are especially proud that the student-run publication, which serves the University of Iowa community, fared so well against professional dailies from across the state with circulations over 10,000.

"It shows that we can compete with the biggest papers in the state as far as quality of the writing, design and photography," said DI Publisher Bill Casey.

The paper's Better Newspaper Contest honors are: First Place, Best News Feature; Second Place, Best Personality Feature; Third Place, Total Newspaper Design; Third Place, Best Sports Story; and First Place, Best Spot News Photo.

Comments from the judges included: "Altogether this paper has impact and lots to interest the reader visually"; "Good storytelling. The subject and his story had many facets, which the writer captured well"; and "This story captures a key moment and pulls us into it. Very fine writing."

These awards come on the heels of the Pacemaker Award, which the DI won earlier this year. This award recognizes The DI as one of the top five campus newspapers in the country. Further, The Daily Iowan has maintained the No. 1 spot on College Publisher's rankings of "Top 100 Papers by Traffic" for the past year.

The DI was founded 135 years ago, and its editorial staff is comprised entirely of students. Full-time professional staff includes the publisher, a writing coach, photo coach and video coach, and advertising and production staff. Each day, it attracts 50,000 readers, including 10,000 to its Web site.

Experience working at The Daily Iowan has helped students land jobs at well-known newspapers across the country, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Des Moines Register and the Chicago Tribune.
