Linn-Mar Science Club Prepares For Trip To Costa Rica Feb. 11

Andrea Neri and Laura Sawatzke, University of Iowa seniors, will speak to the Linn-Mar High School Science Club about their experiences in Costa Rica. The presentation is part of the International Classroom Journey (ICJ) program and will take place 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, in Room 148 at Linn-Mar High School.

Neri and Sawatzke will prepare Linn-Mar Science Club students and faculty for a June 2007 trip to Costa Rica. The presentation will focus on Costa Rica's culture, geography and science.

Mark Hutcheson, a Linn-Mar teacher and science club adviser, said that during the group's 10-day trip, they will study the diverse ecology and landforms found in Costa Rica.

"There are so many different organisms and landforms in Costa Rica, everything from volcanoes to rainforests to oceans," Hutcheson said. "The students will be able to experience ecology that you just can't find in Iowa."

Both Neri, a communications studies major, and Sawatzke, an integrated physiology major, both in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, have studied abroad in Costa Rica. Neri spent five weeks in Central America during the summer learning Spanish and taking Latin dance classes. Sawatzke participated in a tropical biology and ecology program.

ICJ, which is sponsored by UI International Programs, arranges for guest speakers to visit K-12 classrooms and community groups to promote cultural awareness and knowledge of other countries. These guest speakers are trained international students and scholars and U.S. students who have spent time abroad.
