Advisory: UI, Iowa City to unveil proposal for 'City of Literature' designation

WHAT: University of Iowa and Iowa City officials will unveil a unique application - in the form of a beautiful, boxed, hand-crafted volume created with hand-made paper - requesting that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designate Iowa City a City of Literature. The UI Center for the Book specialists who contributed to the special packaging for the proposal are Tim Barrett (handmade papers), Cheryl Jacobsen (calligraphy) and Julie Leonard (box design and construction).

WHEN: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19

WHERE: Shambaugh House, 430 N. Clinton St. on the UI campus

WHO: Participants will include UI President Sally Mason, Iowa City Mayor Ross Wilburn, and International Writing Program Director and Writing University Taskforce Chair Christopher Merrill.

WHY: If the proposal is accepted, Iowa City would be first city in the United States and only the second in the world to wear that mantle.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Photographers and videographers will have an opportunity to shoot images of the proposal/book before it is shipped to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. More information about the UI’s myriad writing programs can be found online at
