CR Panthers basketball team wins UI Hawkeye Shootout

The CR Panthers of Cedar Rapids placed first in their division in the 17th annual Hawkeye Shootout hosted by the University of Iowa Division of Recreational Services Dec. 15-16.

In a rematch from last year's championship game, the CR Panthers defeated the All Iowa Attack of Ames by a score of 32-28 to win the Eighth Grade Girls' Division. The championship game was played at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The CR Panthers were one of the 69 teams that participated in the tournament.

The Hawkeye Shootout is a youth basketball team open to seventh- and eighth-grade girls' and boys' teams from around the region. "It is a high level of play. The top two teams in the championship game are often the teams that play for the Amateur Athletic Union state championship later in the year," said Mike Widen, tournament director.

The tournament is held each year as a fundraiser, supplementing recreation programs at the UI and introducing area seventh- and eighth-graders to the university.
