UI Youth Ballet will perform 'The Nutcracker' Dec. 15 and 16
The University of Iowa Youth Ballet will perform "The Nutcracker" at 8 p.m. Saturday Dec. 15, and 3 p.m. Sunday Dec. 16, in the Space/Place Theater of UI North Hall.
This is the first production under the artistic direction of Sarah Barragán, and it features both the UI Youth Ballet and majors from the UI Department of Dance.
"From the moment the lights dim, you will be transported to a magical place filled with dancing snowflakes, a dashing prince, and Peter Tchaikovsky's majestic score based on one of the world's most beloved ballets," she says.
"Share the tradition of fantasy as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Nutcracker Prince and Clara ignite the imagination of your princes and princesses of all ages. Watch as this unique Iowa City experience unfolds, showcasing exceptional and talented dancers!"
"The "Nutcracker" will be performed by a cast of more than 35 dancers ages 8 through 21, and it features new choreography by Sarah Barragán and dance faculty members Armando Duarte and Eloy Barragán.
Sunday's matinee performance will be followed by a free, on-stage ballet workshop for young audiences. This 20-minute workshop for children ages 4 through 8 will be led by Kathryn Smith, director of the pre-ballet program.
Dancers from the "Nutcracker" will also be there in costume to sign autographs and pose for photos with the children.
