University of Iowa News Release

Aug. 24, 2007

Big Ten Network available in UI residence halls

Students who live in University of Iowa housing will soon be able to watch the Big Ten Network in their residence halls and apartments.

The network, which debuts Aug. 30, has completed an agreement with the university that will add it to the list of channels on the campus cable system. The Big Ten Network will be seen on Channel 26.

"We thought it was appropriate that our students have the opportunity to watch the Hawkeyes when they're on the Big Ten Network," said Von Stange, director of university housing.

"Obviously, we are delighted that the Big Ten Network will be available inside our residence halls and in other locations throughout campus," said Gary Barta, University of Iowa director of athletics. "The UI is committed to the broadest possible distribution of the network and this is one important piece of that plan."

Mike McBride, program manager of Information Technology Services Video Services, said the channel will be available in all buildings that receive the university's cable system, including residence hall rooms and university apartments at Hawkeye Court and Hawkeye Drive. The channel will also be available in the Iowa Memorial Union/Iowa House Hotel, Iowa Memorial Union and all academic buildings wired for cable.

Residents will not have to pay an additional charge for the network, McBride said.

He expects the channel will be on the university's cable system in time for Iowa's first appearance, when the Hawkeye football team hosts Syracuse University Sept. 8. The network will also carry numerous other Hawkeye athletic events in volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball and other sports, and also feature academic programming from the university.

The Big Ten Network is dedicated to covering the Big Ten Conference and its 11 member institutions. The Big Ten Network will provide access to an extensive schedule of conference sports events and shows; original programs in academics, the arts and sciences; campus activities; and associated personalities. Sports programming will include live coverage of major men's and women's events, along with news, highlights and analysis, all complemented by hours of university-produced campus programming.
