Chrischilles To Speak On Rational Therapeutics Aug. 28

Elizabeth Chrischilles, Ph.D., University of Iowa professor of epidemiology, will deliver the 2007 UI College of Public Health Distinguished Faculty Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Room 2117 of the Medical Education and Research Facility. Her presentation, "The Quest for Rational Therapeutics," is free and open to the public.

Rational therapeutics refers to selecting the best therapy to treat a health condition -- balancing efficacy, safety and cost -- given current knowledge. In her presentation, Chrischilles will discuss the limitations of randomized controlled efficacy trials for informing rational therapeutics and suggest alternative approaches to generating relevant evidence.

Chrischilles is the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Chair in Public Health and the director of the UI Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERT), one of 11 such centers funded by the National Institutes of Health. The Iowa CERT focuses on improving the safety and effectiveness of medication use among older adults.

She also directs the UI Health Effectiveness Research Center and holds a secondary appointment in clinical and administrative pharmacy in the UI College of Pharmacy.

For more information or special accommodations to attend this lecture, contact Kathy Hicklin in the College of Public Health at 319-384-5491.
