Dentistry Awarded $2.4 Million For Research Training Program

A research training program at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry has been awarded a $2.4 million grant renewal from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the National Institutes of Health.

The award is a five-year renewal of the program, which provides training opportunities in all career stages -- ranging from short-term training initiatives for dental students to programs of research training at the master's, doctoral and postdoctoral levels -- as well as training for junior faculty. The program provides support for a total of 17 individuals each year.

The program, which is strongly interdisciplinary, draws trainees and mentors from the UI colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Medicine and Public Health as well as Dentistry. It aims to develop the next generation of dental researchers and faculty.

"This is a challenge, given the attraction of dental private practice, but we have a good track record here," said Christopher Squier (left), Ph.D., D.Sc., associate dean for research and graduate studies at the college and director of the program. "For example, nearly 80 percent of our Ph.D. graduates over the past 20 years have taken academic positions."

The College of Dentistry's research training program has been funded by the NIDCR and directed by Squier since 1985, making it one of the longest continually-funded training programs of any dental school in the nation.

Other UI College of Dentistry faculty members involved in the program are: John Keller, Ph.D., professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and dean of the UI Graduate College; Clark Stanford, D.D.S., Ph.D., director of the UI College of Dentistry's Office of Clinical Research; John Warren, D.D.S., director of the college's Dental Student Research Program; and James Wefel, Ph.D., director of the Dows Institute for Dental Research.
