UI To Hold Memorial Service Monday To Remember Virginia Tech Victims

The University of Iowa will hold a memorial service on the Pentacrest at 12:15 p.m. Monday, April 23 to honor and remember the victims of the Virginia Tech University shootings.

UI Interim President Gary Fethke will open the service with remarks. Other speakers currently scheduled to follow with remarks are Barrett Anderson, president of the UI Student Government, and Nancy Olthoff with the UI Association of Campus Ministers.

"The University of Iowa and Iowa City have a special bond with the Virginia Tech community because we have been through similar horrible circumstances and we share their grief," said Fethke. "It's important that our community come together to express our sympathy to Virginia Tech, and to remember those who died there."

The service is open to the public, and members of the Iowa City, Coralville and Johnson County communities in particular are welcome. Music will be played and bells will be rung 37 times, once for each of the 32 Virginia Tech victims and once for each of the five UI victims who died during a shooting spree on the UI campus in 1991. The U.S. flag on Old Capitol will continue to fly at half-staff during the service and through Sunday, in accordance with a proclamation by Iowa Gov. Chet Culver.

In addition to Monday's service, the UI Office of Student Life is distributing 1,700 memorial ribbons made by UI Greeks in the Virginia Tech colors of maroon and orange today, Friday, April 20 in the Iowa Memorial Union and Tippie College of Business.
