UI Engineering Professor To Speak On Global Warming April 24 In Dubuque

As part of the University of Iowa Alumni Association's Lifelong Learning Series, UI professor Craig Just will give a presentation, "Global Warming: Personal Actions to Save Money, Save Time, Save the Planet," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 at the National Mississippi River Museum, 350 E. 3rd St. in Dubuque.

UI Alumni Association and the UI College of Engineering are co-sponsoring this event, which is free and open to the public.

In his talk, Just will highlight the science and potential effects of global warming and focus on practical technologies and actions to help address the issue. He will also help participants calculate a carbon footprint, the sum of carbon dioxide emissions caused by a person's activities in a given time frame. To calculate their carbon footprint, participants can bring estimates of total miles driven, total miles flown, average kilowatt hours of electricity used per month, and average heating fuel used per month. Just will share ways to reduce that footprint in fun and creative ways.

Just is an adjunct assistant professor in the UI Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and is vice president for research and development at the Iowa-based engineering firm, Ecolotree. In addition, he serves as faculty adviser for the UI student chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World.

A reception begins at 6:30 p.m. before the program. Participants will be free to tour the River Museum following the presentation. Participants should RSVP by Friday, April 20 to the UI Alumni Association online at or by calling 800-469-2586.
