Wheelchair Challenge To Be Held At Hubbard Park, Field House April 27

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine's Graduate Program in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science will host the 19th annual Wheelchair Challenge Friday, April 27.

The Wheelchair Challenge aims to raise awareness of persons with disabilities and the challenges they face. This year's events include an obstacle course from noon to 4 p.m. in Hubbard Park at the Iowa Memorial Union and a wheelchair basketball game featuring Hawkeye athletes playing the Iowa Chairiots, a local wheelchair basketball team, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the North Gym of the UI Field House.

Free food and beverages will be available at the basketball game, which also will feature guest speakers and entertainment by the Hawkeye Spirit Squad at halftime.

The events are free and open to the public. Those who attend may purchase $1 raffle tickets for donated prizes to be awarded at the basketball game. Raffle proceeds will go to Pathways Adult Day Health Center, an Iowa City organization that serves adults who require daily living assistance because of medical conditions such as stroke, arthritis, vision loss, multiple sclerosis, depression and Alzheimer's disease. Through recreational and social activities, Pathways works to prevent premature or unnecessary institutionalization of individuals with physical or psychological challenges.
