Wing To Receive Girl Scout Honor For Aiding Women's Rights

The Girl Scouts will honor University of Iowa law professor Adrien Wing for her contributions to forwarding the cause of women's rights around the world.

Wing, the Bessie Dutton Murray professor of law at the University of Iowa College of Law, will receive the Juliet Gordon Low Award from the Girl Scouts of the Mississippi Valley during the organization's It's All About Girls Award Dinner Wednesday, April 18. The award is presented to a resident of Johnson County whose enthusiasm and ability in helping women's rights matches that of Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts.

Wing was a Girl Scout herself as a grade school student growing up in Orange, N.J. She later received her bachelor's degree from Princeton University, a master's from UCLA and her law degree from Stanford University. Since then, she has become an international expert on women's rights with research that focuses on gender discrimination in areas as diverse as Hurricane Katrina, gangs, affirmative action and the war on terror.

She has also researched and written about such women's rights issues as rape in Bosnia and Muslim headscarves in France. She has also helped several countries draft new constitutions - including Rwanda, South Africa and the Palestinian Authority - and worked to incorporate language about women's rights into those documents.

She has also edited two books about women's rights, "Critical Race Feminism-A Reader" and "Global Critical Feminism: An International Reader."

The It's All About Girls Award Dinner begins at 7 p.m. on April 18 at the Marriott Hotel in Coralville to honor outstanding members of Johnson County.
