UI Pharmacy Students Honored For 'Operation Immunization'

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy chapter of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) recently won an award for its participation in "Operation Immunization," a campaign promoting education and implementation of immunization services in pharmacies.

The UI chapter was named the Region 5 winner, which includes ASP chapters in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. The UI Chapter also won this award in 2006.

During the campaign, UI APhA-ASP members administered 3,000 immunizations in Eastern Iowa. UI Pharmacy students Ann Schwemm and Erin Berry coordinated the UI chapter's campaign and chapter president Megan Leloux accepted the award during the annual APhA-ASP meeting, held March 16-19 in Atlanta.

Each year, approximately 60,000 Americans die of pneumococcal disease and 20,000 Americans die of influenza. In general, for every child who dies of a vaccine-preventable disease, 400 adults die from the same disease. In order to combat such statistics, APhA-ASP members participate in this immunization awareness campaign to increase the public's knowledge of immunizations while raising the number of adults receiving immunizations.

Overall, 67 chapters worked with pharmacists to immunize a record-breaking total of 121,317 people. APhA-ASP chapters also sent educational messages about the importance of immunizations to more than 4.1 million people during the campaign.

The student pharmacists continue to educate their communities on avoiding and contracting influenza. From the inception of APhA-ASP's Operation Immunization, pharmacists and student pharmacists have immunized nearly 660,000 people.
