Eprile Presents Writers' Workshop Faculty Lecture April 13
Tony Eprile, a visiting faculty member in the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, will present a free public lecture, "On Observation: The Art of Seeing," at 4 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the Conroy Reading Room of the Schaeffer Library and Archives, the recently dedicated addition to the Dey House.
Eprile explains, "I'm going to be talking about the similarities between scientific and artistic creativity, the art of paying attention, and how who we are determines what we see and vice versa."
Eprile is the author of "Temporary Sojourner: And Other South African Stories" and "The Persistence of Memory," both of which were New York Times Notable Books.
Theo Tait, writing in the New York Times Book Review, called Eprile's work "A passionate fictional attempt to wake from a nightmare of historical complicity." And Daphne Merkin wrote in the Los Angeles Times Book review that his novel "Throws all its chips in the air like a dazzling Nabokovian trick."
The event is part of an ongoing series of Writers' Workshop Faculty Lectures, providing access to the expertise of Writers' Workshop faculty, not only for the UI community but also for the public. The lectures occur roughly monthly throughout the academic year.
The Writers' Workshop is a graduate program in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
