UI Department of Dance presents concert of undergraduate, graduate premieres
The University of Iowa Department of Dance will present a Graduate/Undergraduate Dance Concert at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 6-8, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.
The concert will premiere 12 works by student choreographers whose work ranges from quirky to classical, including meditations on faith, fine art, dance on film and new choreographic forms.
"Five Picassos," choreographed by graduate student Analia Alegre-Femenias presents a portrait of five women from Pablo Picasso's life. Alegre-Femenias also collaborated with senior Erin Zintek on "The Night We Became People Again," a duet inspired by techniques of film editing.
Other senior undergraduates will present work, including Christine Hands and her "Luke 5:10," dancing questions of the religious and the secular. Alison Riazi will present a self-choreographed solo set to the music of cellist Zoe Keating, while Leigha Mena's "Settling for Recovery" showcases her multimedia skills through movement, song and video. New group works by Katie Robbins, Rachael Hillman and Anna Stark feature inventive forms.
New works by graduate candidates include "contrapposto," a new ballet on pointe by Rain Ross. Vladimir Conde-Reche takes an idiosyncratic look at "the will to keep going" with his work, "condensation, precipitation, rain."
Premieres from new graduate students include two meditations on the image, power, and agency of the feminine: "Surge," choreographed by Lynn Bowman; and "Auto-Body" created by Joanna Rosenthal.
Tickets are $12 (UI student $6; Free admission for children under 12).
