National Nurse Practitioner Week Nov. 11-17 highlights unique role

The role of the nurse practitioner (NP) will be showcased Nov. 11-17 as NPs across the country celebrate more than four decades of practice and research during National Nurse Practitioner Week. Nationally, this distinguished group of health care professionals numbers approximately 120,000, with an additional 6,000 NP students graduating each year.

Locally, nurse practitioners and NP students from the University of Iowa College of Nursing conducted glucose monitoring and diabetes education in partnership with Iowa City Hy-Vee Food Store dietitians Nov. 3-4 in conjunction with National Diabetes Awareness Month activities.

Events such as these will be held around the country to acquaint the public with the role of the NP as a provider of high-quality, cost-effective health care.

NP practice offers a unique combination of nursing and health care service to patients in a "care and cure" atmosphere. Focusing not only on diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses, NPs integrate health promotion, disease prevention, counseling, and patient education to help patients understand their complete health picture.

With baby boomers becoming seniors in growing numbers over the next 10 years, it will become even more important to have choices about health care providers. National NP Week brings visibility to the role of nurse practitioners, helping consumers make wise choices when selecting their health care provider. There are more than 1,600 NPs licensed in Iowa.
