UI Welcomes Southwestern Community College to the 2 Plus 2 Transfer Plan

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) has joined the University of Iowa's 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan for transfer students, a new program that will ease the transition for SWCC students planning to transfer to the UI.

Under the 2 Plus 2 plan, UI advisors will help SWCC students select the right courses to receive an Associate of Arts degree in two years at SWCC and successfully transfer to Iowa, where they can earn a bachelor's degree in just two more years, guaranteed.

SWCC is a comprehensive, two-year public institution offering transfer courses, 19 career and technical education programs, continuing education courses, and industrial training classes. It serves an eight-county merged area that includes the Iowa counties of Adair, Adams, Clarke, Decatur, Montgomery, Ringgold, Taylor, and Union.

"We are delighted that Southwestern Community College is coming on board with the 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan," said Lola Lopes, UI interim executive vice president and provost. "Students who complete associate degrees at community colleges already have enhanced prospects for graduation from Iowa compared to community college transfers who do not complete a degree."

"Southwestern appreciates the University of Iowa understanding the value of an associate degree," Linda Wild, SWCC vice president of instruction, said. "By having the 2 Plus 2 Plan in place, Southwestern student participants will have the opportunity to experience a seamless transfer."

Lopes added, "Participation in the 2 Plus 2 Plan will go beyond this by helping smooth the transition to a new campus and a new academic environment and by showing students how to move quickly and effectively through their final years of study."

The addition of SWCC to the 2 Plus 2 program marks the UI's continuing efforts to make the program accessible to students at all Iowa community colleges. The UI welcomed more than 1,000 new transfer students from Iowa community colleges throughout 2006-07.

Earlier this year, the UI announced a new $1,000 scholarship for incoming 2 Plus 2 students with the highest grade-point averages. Overall, the 2 Plus 2 program is designed to help ease the transition between schools.

To benefit most from the degree-planning assistance of 2 Plus 2, students are encouraged to enroll in the plan during their first year of community college. High school students also are encouraged to investigate the plan's potential to save them time and money in pursuit of a four-year degree.

In addition to early advising, 2 Plus 2 students enjoy access to UI library and career-planning resources and discounted admission to select UI cultural and athletic events with their Iowa One Card, the official UI student ID.

The 2 Plus 2 plan is currently available to SWCC students pursuing about 15 Iowa majors, including business, psychology, and sociology.
