UI President Mason joins Iowa Business Council

University of Iowa President Sally Mason recently accepted an invitation to join the Iowa Business Council (IBC).

Membership in the Council includes the top executives of 20 of Iowa's largest employers, the three Regent universities, and Iowa's largest banking association. The purpose of the council is to focus the personal commitment of its members in active leadership roles on major initiatives that enhance the economic vitality of Iowa.

Mason, who holds a full professorship with tenure in the Department of Biological Sciences of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, became the 20th UI president on Aug. 1. Prior to coming to the UI, she served as provost at Purdue University from 2001-07, where she was responsible for planning, managing and reviewing all academic programs at Purdue's West Lafayette and four affiliated branch campuses throughout Indiana.

As provost, her accomplishments included increasing diversity, recruiting top faculty, doubling the research program, advancing public engagement, and improving the learning environment for students. During her tenure, Purdue hired over 800 new faculty, 300 of which were new positions, and 56 percent of those hires were women and/or minorities. She also formed a diversity leadership group at Purdue and was instrumental in the development of Purdue's Discovery Park, an interdisciplinary research incubator focused on such topics as nanotechnology, entrepreneurship and the biosciences.

Founded in 1985, the IBC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, self-funded organization. Collectively, IBC companies and institutions employ more than 203,000 Iowans and, in just the last 10 years, have invested over $13 billion worth of capital in the state.
