UI Hosts Community Conversations In Cedar Rapids June 30

The University of Iowa is hosting "Community Conversations" Saturday, June 30 to engage Cedar Rapids residents in a discussion exploring common goals, potential partnerships, and University of Iowa resources.

The community forum, co-sponsored by the Jane Boyd Community House, will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday June 30 at the Jane Boyd Community House, 943 14th Ave. SE in Cedar Rapids. The event starts with a reception from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by a discussion from 2 to 3 p.m.

Panelists, moderated by Willie Barney, principal of North Central Junior High in North Liberty, will be:

--William "Bill" Hood, former director of the Harambee House

--Ellen Daye-Williams, principal, Grant Wood Elementary in Cedar Rapids

--Karl Cassell, executive director, Jane Boyd Community House

--Michael Hogan, UI executive vice president and provost

--Marcella David, special assistant to the president for diversity and associate provost for diversity at the UI.

Participants are invited to share ideas and get information about education and employment opportunities, health care programs, and cultural diversity resources. The UI has invited several organizations, individuals and alumni to attend.

"The goal of this forum is to make connections in the community, especially community leaders, to let them know about the university's current outreach efforts and find out more about what ideas they have for community connections," David said. "We hope the outcome will be stronger connections between the university and the Cedar Rapids community."

From 1 to 4:30 p.m., there will be information fair featuring several UI colleges and departments: the UI Center for Diversity and Enrichment, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, Belin-Blank International Center for Gifted and Talented Education, Human Resources, Employment Services and the Civic Engagement Program.

"The University of Iowa represents an extraordinary resource for the people of the state," Hogan says. "And, as a public university, it's very much part of our mission to seek out ways to positively affect the lives of those we serve. This forum is a terrific opportunity for us to get some fresh ideas about how we can contribute to growth and well-being of the Cedar Rapids community."

Cassell said he is pleased to have Jane Boyd Community House partnering with the UI on "Community Conversations" and invites Cedar Rapidians of all generations to attend. "We'd like to see business people, young professionals and older residents come to this event, and anyone who is thinking about education, employment, health and diversity issues," he said.

The Jane Boyd Community House provides Cedar Rapids area youth and families with youth development, family support, and educational programs in a culturally inclusive environment. It offers numerous services for youth and adults including morning and afternoon preschool, after school program, summer day camp, athletic leagues, martial arts, boxing, aerobics, a computer lab and numerous other opportunities.
