Jan. 16, 2007 New Space To Be Dedicated At Iowa Memorial Union Jan. 19
The Hubbard Pavilion honors Hubbard for his years of service and dedication to University students and community members. The new Hubbard Pavilion includes: the first-floor Hubbard Commons, second-floor Student Organization Office Suite and University of Iowa Student Government office, and the third-floor study space and IMU Black Box Theater. The ceremony, to take place in the Main Lounge of the IMU, will feature remarks from: Phillip Jones, vice president for Student Services; Peter McElligott, UISG president; Robert Downer, Board of Regents, State of Iowa; Interim UI President Gary Fethke; honored guest Richard C. Hubbard (Philip's son); and others. Hubbard dedicated more than 40 years of service to the UI and witnessed one-third of the university's history. He received his bachelors, masters and doctorate from the UI. Hubbard served as dean of Academic Affairs and vice president of Student Services, and was the first African-American vice president at the UI. He also wrote "My Iowa Journey, The Life Story of the University of Iowa's First African American Professor." Phase I of renovations has allowed the IMU to continue its tradition as the community center of the university. Specific enhancements of Phase I include: --Hubbard Pavilion: three-story infill space on east side of the IMU. --Hubbard Commons: new Campus Information Center, University Box Office, Bijou Theater, student gallery space, Memorial Wall, formal fireplace lounge, central staircase and elevator for easy access within the building. --New Student Organization Office Suite and UISG Office. --Restoration of the historic Main Lounge.--River Terrace, a river patio and stage to open the facility to the Iowa River. --Updated University Bookstore. --The Hawkeye (formerly known as the Wheelroom): an entertainment lounge with pool tables, ping-pong, foosball, plasma TV's and a snack shack. --New IMU Black Box Theater (to be completed mid-March). --Copy Hawk: new full service copy center with self-service PC's, black and white printing, and color copying.
