Venezuelan Journalist Begins National Tour With Iowa City Visit Oct. 2-5

The Council for International Visitors to Iowa Cities (CIVIC) will host Venezuelan journalist Maria Angelica Correa Oct. 2-5. Iowa City will be the first stop of a two-week national tour for Correa, an investigative journalist. CIVIC, which is affiliated with University of Iowa International Programs, is sponsoring Correa as a part of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.

The writer plans to explore topics such as small town Internet media, investigative journalism on an academic level and ethics and training in journalism during her time in Iowa City. CIVIC Executive Director Thomas Baldridge said that an appointment dealing with First Amendment rights and responsibilities will also be on Correa's agenda. In addition to these activities, Correa will visit local media outlets.

Since 2001, Correa has worked as a reporter for Zeta Magazine, a weekly publication, and El Nuevo País, a daily publication. In the past, she has been a contributor for TVE in Spain, RCN in Columbia and a correspondent for TV Azteca. She was a reporter on the Weather Channel from 1997 to 2000. Correa also worked as an independent producer in 2000.
