UI Lecturer To 'Demythologize Pocahontas' Oct. 3

Noted author, feminist and activist Paula Gunn Allen will visit the University of Iowa Tuesday, Oct. 3 to deliver a free, public lecture, "Demythologizing Pocahontas" at 5:30 p.m. in room 151 Pappajohn Business Building.

Allen (Laguna Pueblo/Sioux) is professor emerita of English, creative writing and American Indian studies at the University of California at Los Angeles. Her most recent book, "Pocahontas: Medicine Woman, Spy, Entrepreneur, Diplomat," challenges commonly held views about native women's lives. Her talk will add to important discussions in the coming year, which will mark the 400th anniversary of the settling of Jamestown. 

Allen received both her bachelor's degree in English (1966) and her Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing (1968) from the University of Oregon. She received her doctorate in American studies with an emphasis on Native American literature (1975) from the University of New Mexico. She holds the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writer's Circle of the Americas in 2001 and received the American Book award from the Before Columbus Foundation in 1990 for her book "Spider Woman's Granddaughters: Traditional Tales and Contemporary Writing."

Allen is visiting the UI as an Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor sponsored by The Office of the Provost; the American Indian & Native Studies Program, the of English and women's studies departments, the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies, The Center for Ethnic Studies and the Arts, all in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; the Women's Resource and Action Center; and the American Indian Student Association
