Oct. 4 WSUI Reading Features Nature Writer Gretchen Legler

Nature writer Gretchen Legler, author of "All the Powerful Invisible Things," will read from her recent book "On the Ice: An Intimate Portrait of Life at McMurdo Station, Antarctica" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.

The reading, hosted by Julie Englander, will be broadcast on the "Live from Prairie Lights" series on UI radio station WSUI, AM 910. Listen on the Internet at wsui.uiowa.edu.

Part travelogue, part cultural meditation and part love story, "On the Ice" depicts one of the oddest communities in one of the most extreme places on earth. Legler was sent to Antarctica as an observer for the National Science Foundation, and she found there a community of people stripped of any excess by the necessities of existence in a harsh land.

Colleen Mondor wrote for Booklist, "Her attention to detail serves her well, and her ability to explain the history and science of Antarctica in a personable and poetic style truly makes her book sing."

Legler is a faculty member in the Department of Humanities at the University of Maine in Farmington. The recipient of two Pushcart Prizes, she has published essays, stories and reviews in the Georgia Review, the Indiana Review, Orion, the Women's Review of Books and other magazines.
