The best intrastate football rivalry in the Midwest is the Iowa/Iowa State game Sept. 16, and the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) is encouraging fans to show their Hawkeye pride during "Beat Iowa State Week" starting Sept. 12.
"Beat Iowa State Week" is an initiative of our Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.) Ambassadors, sponsored by the UIAA, KZIA 102.9, the Daily Iowan, Big Ten Rentals and Insync Apparel and Promotions.
The week will feature online contests, giveaways, discounts, and more, starting with a kick-off event Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hubbard Park, where "Beat Iowa State" stickers and Mardi Gras-style Hawkeye necklaces will be distributed (while supplies last). The Daily Iowan will give out "Beat Iowa State" signs and a schedule of events. A blood drive is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Iowa Memorial Union; blood donors will receive a "Beat State" T-shirt
On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the events continue at Hubbard Park with Game Day, where fans can play "goofy golf," toss beanbags and throw footballs, competing for prizes. S.T.A.T. members who show their S.T.A.T. card will receive a special Hawkeye kozi and beverage. S.T.A.T. is also sponsoring a food and clothing drive on Wednesday at Hubbard Park. All donated items will benefit local assistance programs.
Thursday, Sept. 14, is Black and Gold Day, and S.T.A.T. continues the blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Iowa Room of the IMU. All registered donors will receive a "Beat State" T-shirt. Register at http://uiowa.givesblood.org.
On Friday, Sept. 15, S.T.A.T. Ambassadors will distribute T-shirts to 300 fans at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. at Hubbard Park. The week ends with a cookout at Burge Hall from 4 to 7 p.m. Johnsonville Brat's "World's Largest Grill" will make an appearance at Burge Hall. Students cans also have fun playing carnival games, entering brat eating contest, and listening to a live band at the cookout.
The University Book Store will have its grand re-opening Wednesday through Friday in the IMU Ground Floor, and will have daily prizes, giveaways and specials. Throughout the week, fans can test their Hawkeye knowledge in the UIAA's online trivia contest at http://www.iowalum.com/beatisu/trivia06 and enter to win a football autographed by Hawkeye Football Coach Kirk Ferentz.
