Annual CIVIC Meeting Premiers Video Nov. 2

A video featuring Middle Eastern and North African visitors will premier at the annual meeting of the Council for International Visitors to Iowa Cities (CIVIC) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in the International Commons, Room 1117 University Capitol Centre (UCC). This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The 18-minute video presents CIVIC visitors meeting with Iowa City Mayor Ross Wilburn. It will also be shown on Public Access Television (PATV) in November. CIVIC will host five visitors from China, who will attend the annual meeting. Kenneth Hubel, CIVIC president, will welcome the crowd.

CIVIC is a member of the National Council for International Visitors. It is one of about 97 similar organizations that host and coordinate visits by guests of the U.S. State Department and several other agencies for international cultural and educational exchange. Some 200 foreign heads of government have participated in the program since its inception in 1941, including British Prime Minister Anthony C.L. Blair, late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.

When a visit under the auspices of the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program includes eastern Iowa, CIVIC arranges for professional consultations and field trips, like the meeting with Wilburn featured in the video. Visitors are also invited to participate in the social and cultural life of local communities through home hospitality, sightseeing, cultural and recreational events.

For more information or special accommodations to attend this event, call Tom Baldridge, CIVIC executive director, or Marianne Weiss, CIVIC office Manager, at 319-335-0351.

CIVIC is a part of International Programs, which enables University of Iowa students, faculty, staff and the public to learn from and about the world. Its offices, degree programs and events provide life-changing opportunities on campus and abroad, heighten intellectual and cultural diversity, and give all University constituents access to vital international knowledge.
