People With Type 2 Diabetes Can Join Study

People ages 18 to 78 with type 2 diabetes are invited to take part in a University of Iowa research study on controlling blood sugar.

The study will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an investigational drug to control blood sugar, when used in combination with two approved medications used to treat diabetes.

Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, people in the process of losing weight, and those who have needed insulin within the past three months are not eligible to participate.

Eligible participants will be asked to make up to 14 visits over 19 months to the UI Lipid Research Center. In addition, participants must be willing to keep an at-home record of blood sugar levels and receive check-in phone calls from study staff.

All participants will receive the two approved medications. In addition, each participant will randomly be assigned to receive the investigational drug or a placebo (inactive drug). Each participant will have a one-in-three chance of receiving the investigational drug and a two-in-three chance of receiving the placebo.

All study participants will receive free of charge study-related physical exams, laboratory evaluations, a glucose meter for home glucose monitoring and study pills. Compensation for participation also will be provided.

Nearly 300 individuals are expected to participate in this multi-site study. The UI portion of the study is led by Jennifer Robinson, M.D., associate professor of epidemiology in the UI College of Public Health and director of the UI Lipid Research Center.
