The Illinois Brass Quintet, the faculty quintet in residence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present a free concert as guests of the University of Iowa School of Music at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in Harper Hall of the UI Voxman Music Building.

Currently in its 51st year, the Illinois Brass Quintet was the first faculty brass quintet in the world. The group presents recitals, clinics, and master classes at secondary schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States. Its current members are Michael Ewald and Ronald Romm, trumpets; Kazimierz Machala, horn; Elliot Chasanov, trombone; and Mark Moore, tuba.

The Oct. 24 program will include a variety of original works for brass quintet and arrangements of classical and light classical pieces:

-- "Dance" for brass quintet by Wilke Renwick;

-- "Two Renaissance Madrigals," music by Claudio Monteverdi, edited and arranged for brass by Ray Mase;

-- the Toccata and Fugue in D minor by J.S. Bach, arranged for brass quintet by W. Fred Mills;

-- "Summer" and "Autumn" from "Seasons" for brass quintet by John Stevens;

-- "Sunset Rag" by Kazimierz Machala;

-- "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev, arranged for brass quintet by Elliot Chasanov, with UI horn professor Jeffrey Agrell as narrator; and

-- "Gershwin Suite," featuring music of George Gershwin arranged for brass quintet by Luther Henderson

The concert is part of the quintet's fall concert tour, which includes performances at Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa and Luther College.

The Illinois Brass Quintet was founded in 1955. Current members of the quintet have performed with major orchestras in the United States and abroad. They have also performed at numerous festivals and as members of ensembles including the Canadian Brass, Chicago Brass Quintet, Chicago Chamber Brass, Los Angeles Brass Quintet, Metropolitan Brass Quintet, Sonus Brass, and the United States Air Force Chamber Players.
