UI's Old Capitol And Art Building West Projects Win AIA Honors

Two University of Iowa building projects received Honor Awards in 2006 from the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The projects, the Old Capitol restoration project and the new Art Building West, were recognized at the 2006 AIA Iowa Convention on Sept. 29.

The Old Capitol Fire Restoration award notice called the project "beautifully and lovingly executed. Appropriate care and attention to detail in an effort to preserve and enhance an existing character.  Successfully maintained a heritage while overcoming a tragedy."  OPN Architects Inc. of Cedar Rapids, in partnership with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, a preservation architecture firm in Boston, were the architects for the project. The UI project manager is Gary Nagle, AIA.

About the Art Building West project, the award states it is "unabashedly contemporary in every way. A great leap of faith by a Midwestern university. Handsome blending of visual and physical connections of the outside and inside." Nationally recognized design architect Steven Holl of New York collaborated with Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture of Des Moines in the design of the new Art Building West. The UI project managers are Rod Lehnertz, AIA, and Michael Thomas, AIA.

The annual awards program recognizes excellence in architecture and emphasizes its importance in the Iowa community.
