UI To Host United Way Kick-off Event

The University of Iowa will open this year's United Way fundraising drive on Tuesday, Oct. 10, with a kick-off celebration featuring food, games, and entertainment.

The celebration will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on the River Terrace of the Iowa Memorial Union. Admission is free. The event will begin with a community drumming experience led by West Music's Melissa Blum.

Michael Hogan, executive vice president and provost, and Meredith Hay, vice president for research, are co-chairs of this year's event. They will speak at 1:30 p.m., along with Peter McElligott, president of the University of Iowa Student Government, who will challenge the university's faculty and staff to match the participation rate of students.

The event will feature informational displays about the agencies funded by the United Way and speakers discussing the work the agencies do, along with food, music and door prizes for people attending.
