APHL Names Wichman As Katz Award Winner

The Association for Public Health Laboratories (APHL) has announced that Michael Wichman, Ph.D., associate director-environmental services at the University Hygienic Laboratory (UHL), is the winner of the Martha Katz Outstanding Team Leadership Project Award.

The annual award is given by Public Health Leadership Institute (PHLI) to the scholar team whose project "best reflects the strategic, innovative and successful team leadership demonstrated by the work of Martha Katz." Katz is the former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) deputy director for policy and legislation, and the current director of health policy at the Healthcare Georgia Foundation.

Wichman was part of a four-member team known as APHL Public Health Laboratory Scholars that developed a set of tools to help prepare future generations of state public health laboratory scientists for management positions. This project was created in response to a shortage of qualified scientist-managers and the absence of a pipeline to develop individuals with necessary skills.

"Dr. Wichman is to be applauded for recognizing and taking action on the need to develop tomorrow's public health laboratory leadership," said Christopher Atchison, UHL interim director. "Like all areas of health science, today's leaders are beginning to retire and they must be replaced. Dr. Wichman and his colleagues have created the tools which will help us find those replacements and will help ensure improved health for Iowans today and in the years to come."

Other members of the laboratory scholars team are Jack DeBoy, Dr.P.H., of the Maryland Public Health Laboratory; Patrick Luedtke, M.D., of the Utah Public Health Laboratory; and Nancy Warren, Ph.D., of the Pennsylvania Public Health Laboratory.

The PHLI is a yearlong leadership development program supported by the CDC and the APHL. The program is offered through a partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School and School of Public Health.
