Photos By Vinton Youth In UI Exhibit

Zane Darland of Vinton has won a University of Iowa photo essay contest titled "The Animals Among Us." Darland's photo of a pygmy goat is part of the "Wild about Animals!" exhibit currently on display through March 31, 2007 at the Iowa Children's Museum in Coralville.

Each participant sent in a photo and an essay that described the image's significance and the writer's relationship with the featured creatures.  Darland's photo and essay are available at

The adult division of the "Animals Among Us" exhibit is on display now through Jan. 14, 2007, at the Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City.

After ending at the UI, both exhibitions will travel to various locations around the state of Iowa. The "Animals Among Us" exhibit is presented by the UI's Obermann Animal Studies Group, a venture dedicated to the field of animal studies.

"This project asks Iowans to consider the many ways that they depend on animals and animals depend on them," said Teresa Mangum, associate professor of English in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who co-directs the Obermann group. "One of the goals of the contest was to inspire Iowans to reflect not only on their pets, but also on farm animals, wild animals, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even insects."

"The Animals Among Us" is part of the group's "Animals/Arts/Iowa" project, a series of exhibitions, lectures and films that reflect on the relations between humans and animals. Sponsors of "Animals/Arts/Iowa" include the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, Institute for Cinema and Culture, 18th-19th Century Interdisciplinary Colloquium, International Programs, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, UI Museum of Art, the School of Art and Art History, the UI Office of the President's Year of Public Engagement Award, the UI Office of the Vice President for Research, Presentations, Old Capitol Museum, and Iowa Children's Museum.
