UI Alumni Association Honored For Programs, Communications

The University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) received three gold awards and one silver award in the 2006 Pride of CASE V awards competition.

The awards are given by a regional district of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) to recognize the value of members' programs and communications. The competition attracted hundreds of submissions from alumni and educational organizations across the Midwest.

Iowa Alumni Magazine editor Tina Owen earned a gold award in the Excellence in Research/Science/Medical Writing category for the UIAA magazine's December 2005 feature "To Stop a Killer," which told the story of an alumnus who dug up clues on how scientists might prevent another influenza pandemic.

The University of Iowa was the only school recognized in the Best Practices in Alumni Relations category. The Memphis Iowa Club won gold for its cookbook "Hawkeye Style: A Collection of Hawkeye Recipes," while the Iowa Troops Care Packages program - a collaborative effort among Iowa Clubs throughout the country to supply Iowa soldiers overseas with useful items - collected a silver award. Susan Griffith, UIAA director of alumni programs, and UIAA program assistant Kerry Jones coordinated both programs with Iowa Club leaders and volunteers.

The Iowa Troops Care Packages project, initiated by the Paradise Iowa Club in Florida, also won a gold award for Best Volunteer Engagement.
