UI Study On Bird Flu Invites Participants Age 65 And Older

Men and women age 65 and older are invited to participate in a study at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on the effectiveness and safety of different dosages of avian (bird) flu vaccine and the potential of a certain additive to increase vaccine effectiveness.

The vaccine does not include live avian flu virus but an inactive form that does not cause disease yet may stimulate an immune response.

Participants must be in overall good health. Individuals who are allergic to eggs or have had severe reactions to a flu vaccine are not eligible to participate.

The study will compare the immune responses and reactions of participants who are randomly assigned to one of eight different study groups. Four different dilutions of vaccine will include an additive that may improve the immune response and will be compared to four comparable vaccination doses that do not contain the additive. The vaccines are for the H5N1 strain.

Participants in each group will receive two vaccine shots over a four-week period. Study participants must make eight visits to UI Hospitals and Clinics over approximately eight months. The study will cover the cost of all required tests and exams. Compensation will be available.

Patricia Winokur, M.D., UI associate professor of internal medicine, is the principal investigator for the UI portion of the trial. The study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and will include five other study sites: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Baylor University, University of Maryland, University of Rochester and University of Washington. A total of 600 participants will be enrolled in the study, including 100 at the UI.
