UI Student Wins Regional Entrepreneurial Award

University of Iowa student Brad Phillips recently won a first place award in a regional competition of the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards.

Phillips will receive $2,000 and travel to Chicago this fall to compete in the Global Student Entrepreneur Award competition, held in conjunction with the National CEO! Conference.

Hosted by the Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the regional competition was open to undergraduate students in 10 states: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Alaska. The Global Student Entrepreneur Awards recognize exceptional entrepreneurial skill and creativity among undergraduate students enrolled in colleges, universities, or other post-secondary institutions.

Phillips is president of Premis Industries, which produces DVDs of motocross riders and other items promoting off-road racing. He started the company at the UI's Bedell Entrepreneurship Learning Laboratory in November 2003. He travels the country filming motocross races and behind-the-scenes footage of the racers' lives. His first video, "Carpe Diem," earned two national awards shortly after its release. Two other videos have been released since, selling more than 12,000 copies to date. Premis plans to expand by selling a clothing line.

"Brad has had to balance work and school and has done so effectively. Brad maintains a very busy schedule between attending the UI and operating his businesses. He even finds time to give back. He is regularly willing to volunteer his time to mentor young people and share his experiences," said Lynn Jahn, assistant director of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center at the UI.
